You’ve encountered error F990-902-01 while e-filing your tax return. This error occurs when the EIN isn’t classed as an exempt organization in the IRS database.

Common Causes:

  • Pending Exempt Status: The organization would have applied to get exempt status, but filed the 990 return before getting the tax-exempt status.
  • Revoked Exempt Status: The organization’s tax-exempt status might have been revoked because it did not file returns for more than 3 consecutive years.

  1. Verify EIN:
    1. Carefully review your tax return and compare the EIN with those on your business records and any previous tax filings.

    1. If the issue persists, reach out to the IRS e-help Desk at 866-255-0654. They can verify your EIN and guide correcting any discrepancies.

    1. If you’ve made any corrections to the EIN, retransmit it.
