Filing IRS Form 2290 can be simple but only if you avoid errors that could lead to penalties or rejected filings. Here are the most common mistakes to watch out for:

1. Entering the Wrong Vehicle Identification Number (VIN)

  • A wrong VIN is the most common reason for IRS rejection when filing Form 2290. Even a single-digit error in VIN will lead to the rejection of your application by the IRS.
  • Review and verify your VIN against your vehicle documents before submitting your return.

Note: TaxZerone provides Free VIN correction for Form 2290 filings.

2. Wrong EIN

  • Form 2290 will require a valid Employer Identification Number (EIN) to process your return.
  • Any return processed using a Social Security Number (SSN) instead of EIN will automatically be rejected by the IRS. So, make sure your EIN is active and registered before filing.

3. Filing for the Wrong Tax Period

  • Form 2290 follows a fiscal year period from July 1st to June 30th, which usually causes confusion among the filers.
  • Filing under the wrong tax year would lead to processing delays and even miscalculations of taxes.
  • As a result, it is essential to verify the filing period before submission to the IRS.

4. Using the Wrong Taxable Gross Weight

  • Heavy Vehicle Use Tax (HVUT) is calculated based on your vehicle’s taxable gross weight.
  • Selecting the wrong weight category can lead to serious issues such as overpaying or underpaying.
  • It may result in penalties, audits, or required to file amendments. Make sure to check your vehicle’s weight category before filing to the IRS.

Tip: Use our Form 2290 tax calculator to determine the Heavy Vehicle Use Tax based on your vehicle’s taxable gross weight.

5. Not Indicating Logging or Agricultural Vehicle Status

  • If your vehicle qualifies as a logging or agricultural vehicle, clearly indicate on Form 2290. These vehicles are eligible for reduced tax rates or exemptions.
  • Failing to properly report this information can lead to overpayment of taxes and missed benefits. This will lead you to correct your filing later through a Form 2290 amendment or 2290 refund claim.
  • Always review your vehicle classification before submitting the form to ensure you are paying only what is required.

6. Filing Manually Instead of E-filing

Manually filing Form 2290 can result in delays or even rejection, especially if you are reporting and paying tax on 25 or more vehicles. The IRS strongly encourages e-filing, as it ensures faster processing, minimizes errors, and provides your IRS-stamped Schedule 1 within minutes of acceptance.

Note: Tax-suspended vehicles (designated by category W) aren’t included in the electronic filing requirement for 25 or more vehicles because you aren’t paying tax on them.
